Beagles and Shedding

Although beagles are short- haired and don't need to be groomed, they do need to be brushed. They will shed, sometimes a lot if the environment is dry and warm. They will get a thicker coat during the cool, winter months. They should still have a sweater on if the temperature is low. But, they grow an extra furry undercoat during winter months.

When the temperature turns warmer, this extra fur will begin to shed. The warmer it gets, the more you will notice fur on your carpet and furniture as well as your clothes. Some- times, big clumps of fur can be pulled out from under the top coat. You would never expect this by looking at a beagle's smooth, short coat of fur.

Beagles should be brushed often. They love being brushed and will happily lay still for this procedure. Since beagles crave attention, brushing your beagle is a good bonding exercise. They will gladly lay down for as long as you want to brush them.

After a bath is a good time to brush your beagle. A gentle shampoo will keep the coat shiny and a conditioner can also help with dry skin.
